7 Common Moisturiser Mistakes You Could be Making

So you just bought the most hyped moisturiser on the market, but it didn’t live up to your high expectations? We’ve all been there, done that. You probably didn’t get the most of it because, well, you might be doing something wrong.

Before you rush into throwing that newly bought jar into the bin, read on to avoid the most common mistakes when putting on moisturiser.

Applying it to a dry (instead of damp) skin

Moisturiser works best on freshly cleaned, damp skin. You want to ensure that the hydration is locked in, and slight wetness on your skin will help to do so. Applying moisturiser on dry skin prevents the moisture from penetrating, thus making it less effective.

You apply moisturiser without washing your hands

Avoid contaminations and breakouts by washing your hands before applying moisturiser. This step is super crucial to ensure that you don’t transfer all those germs from your hands onto your pores. Bacterias love dark and damp areas, so steer them clear from your favourite moisturiser jar!

Skipping moisturiser on oily skin

Somewhere, your skin’s guardian angel is crying when you purposely skip moisturiser because you have oily-combi skin. It’s time to debunk this old myth and give your thirsty skin a drink. ‘Dry look’ may seem cool for you, but trust us, your skin will produce extra oil during the day, resulting in excess sebum production. Avoid this vicious cycle with a light yet effective formula to guard against water loss and external aggressors. Have you tried our Tasmanian Spring Water Hydration Boost Cream? It’s like a one-size-fits-all gel-cream with the right nutrients to lock in moisture without the heavy feel.

You use too much or too little

We all want our moisturiser to work its magic, but applying a lot of it in one go won’t do the trick. Instead of a healthy amount of hydration, your skin might create a filmy residue which results in pilling. Apply small dabs to key areas like your forehead, cheeks, and chin, and gently massage it in.

Feel like something is still lacking from your routine? Be sure to apply hydrating serum to optimise the results! Try incorporating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and fermented sea kelp found in our Tasmanian Spring Water Splash Serum to boost the works of your moisturiser.

Being too harsh when applying

We know that you’re in a hurry, but if you want your moisturiser to work, it’s best to work gently with it. Rubbing it too harshly and vigorously (even when you’re super excited to get that instant hydration) leads to skin irritation and wrinkles. Take some time to apply it in upward motions, and use your fingers to softly rub it in. You can even use a face roller to massage your face to help tighten the skin and depuff it as you go.

You often forget your neck areas

The line can be blurry. Should I use facial moisturiser or body lotion for these areas? Just like the eyes, the skin around our neck is some of the thinnest on the body. Apply moisturiser to prevent wrinkles and looseness around your neck and chest areas, also in upward motions after rubbing your face. First self-care mission of the day? Check.

Your moisturiser contains some nasty ingredients

Despite all the marketing promises, your moisturiser does not seem to perform just as well. We recommend you verify one thing, does it contain more harmful ingredients than the good? Naughty ingredients may not only cause disruption to the skin’s moisture, but they can also sensitise your skin with continuous use. Ingredients such as sulfates can dry out and irritate your skin in the long run and silicones tend to get stuck in your pores and might cause breakouts.

At Sand & Sky, we are committed to clear away from these ingredients and focus on effective Aussie botanicals instead for the best results. Who needs nasties anyway?
